Some helpful information before you start...

We have put together some answers to the most common questions that applicants ask us. We hope that these help you. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

  1. What do I need to do to complete my application?
    • fill out the application form
    • upload your CV
    • upload documentation (maximum 10 images and 2 moving images)
    • describe documentation
    • fulfil payment (if applicable)
    • submit application
  2. How do I create a new online account to submit an application form?
    Go to https://rijksakademie.heiapply.com/application/register and complete the form. Please remember to keep note of your email address and password that you used.
  3. I have an applied in 2018, can I use the same application?
    You have to fill out a completely new application form if you want to apply to the Rijksakademie residency in 2020. You can use the same email address and password as you used in the previous application. All you have to do is log in. If you have forgotten your password, please click ‘Forgot password?’ An email will be sent to your email with instructions on how to set a new one. Once logged in a new registration page will pop up asking you to create a new application. Once you have registered, you can complete your new application form.
  4. How do I log in to my account?
    Go to https://rijksakademie.heiapply.com/application/login and filling your email address and password that you used to register your account.
  5. What if I forget my password?
    Use the forgot password feature https://rijksakademie.heiapply.com/application/forgot. We will identify you and send the password securely to your registered email address, or give you access to reset your password.
  6. When is the deadline for the application?
    February 1, 2019 (23:59 CET/Dutch time. Please note that the application form together with all required (visual) documentation must be uploaded and submitted before this time!
  7. Can I take my time to complete the application form?
    Yes. You can do so by saving each section and come back to it at a later moment by logging in with your e-mail address and password. Remember to save your username and password. Please make sure to complete and submit your application before the deadline: February 1, 2019, 23:59:59 Dutch Time/CET.
  8. Can I change my application after submitting my application form?
    No, once you have submitted we review the information that you have provided. We may ask you for more information, but you can't change your application anymore after the deadline of February 1, 2019, 23:59:59 Dutch Time/CET.
  9. What kind of digital documentation needs to be uploaded to complete the application?
    The documentation must give an accurate idea of how your work has developed over the last three years. Key aspects of the work should be explained clearly in your application. If you are presenting documentation of collaborative projects please specify your contribution.
  10. Can I upload moving images or audio pieces?
    We expect to see video when you work with time based media. Moving image can be an autonomous work, a registration of a work (for instance a perfomance) or a piece that involves movement (for instance a kinetic sculpture).
  11. How many digital images can I upload?
    All applicants are required to upload a minimum of 5 digital images and a maximum of 10 digital images with a maximum size of 10 MB per image.
  12. How many moving images can I upload?
    Applicants can upload a maximum of 2 moving images/sound pieces. The files cannot exceed the size limit of 100 MB. Maximum 100 MB per file, but preferably less than 100 MB, please use the compress tool found in the application form to downsize files. We are aware this might not be the best version of your video, but due to the process we cannot accept bigger files. You will not be judged on the quality of the compressed files.


    The total combined length of the uploaded moving images/sound pieces cannot exceed 5 minutes.
    • Applicants working with time based media can provide Vimeo/Youtube links to full length works in the description. Please note: adding Vimeo/Youtube links is NOT mandatory.
  13. I have submitted my application. What happens next?
    You will receive a confirmation that you have submitted your complete application. After the deadline of February 1, 2019, we will check whether your application is indeed complete and that the required supporting documents have been provided.
  14. I forgot to submit my application before the deadline. What happens?
    Your application needs to be complete and submitted before the deadline. You can only submit if you have completed 100% of the application form. Incomplete applications will not be submitted automatically. If you have not submitted your complete application before the deadline, your application will not be viewed by the jury.
  15. Can I contact someone about my application?
    Yes, if you have any questions during the admissions process please get in touch with us via the Communication Inbox in your Quicklinks Menu once you logged in.
  16. What is the maximum file upload size?
    Maximum upload size is 10 MB for digital images and 100 MB for moving images. File types: jpeg/jpg or mp4 and mp3.
  17. What happens after the deadline?
    You will receive a confirmation of your application by the end of February. After we have checked all completed applications we will inform you about the selection process. You will be updated about the process through email and on the homepage of your application form.
